Podiatrist careers in Singapore are built around the public healthcare clusters, where podiatrists are a core part of diabetic foot, wound care and polyclinic services, and a smaller but growing private market in biomechanics, sports and paediatric podiatry. Singapore has no local podiatry school, so its hospitals have always recruited podiatrists trained abroad, mainly in Australia and the UK. For IMEA-region podiatrists with a recognised degree and hospital experience, it is one of the most structured podiatry job markets in Asia.
The title used locally is simply podiatrist, with public institutions typically advertising Podiatrist and Senior Podiatrist grades. There is no DPM or podiatric surgery pathway; podiatrists work as allied health professionals alongside doctors, nurses and orthopaedic and vascular teams.
How podiatry is regulated in Singapore
A common assumption is that podiatry was recently added to the Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC). It has not been. The AHPC, established under the Allied Health Professions Act 2011, regulates five professions: diagnostic radiographers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, radiation therapists and speech-language therapists (moh.gov.sg). The AHPC’s own list of registers shows the same five professions and no podiatry register (ahpc.gov.sg). Podiatry is therefore not a statutorily registered profession, there is no AHPC registration step or exam, and the title “podiatrist” is not protected by law. Check the AHPC site before you apply in case this changes.
In place of statutory registration, standards are set by employers and by the profession. Public sector advertisements ask for a bachelor’s degree in podiatry, with senior posts requiring hospital experience. A recent Singapore General Hospital listing, for example, asked for a degree in podiatry, with at least four years of relevant hospital experience for the senior grade (careers.singhealth.com.sg). NUHS states that podiatrists need a bachelor’s degree in podiatry and points prospective students to programmes approved by the Podiatry Board of Australia or the UK Health and Care Professions Council (nuhs.edu.sg). SGH confirms that podiatrists qualify overseas “as there is currently no podiatry school in Singapore” (ask.gov.sg).
The professional body is the Podiatry Association (Singapore), PA(S), founded in 1993. Full membership is open to podiatrists resident in Singapore holding a valid podiatry qualification from a recognised institution, gives “PA(S) Accredited Status” and a listing in its Find a Podiatrist directory, and the association states that registered podiatrists must follow the code of conduct set by the AHPC. Overseas podiatrists can join as associate members (podiatry.org.sg). Membership is voluntary but widely expected by employers and patients.
The podiatry employment landscape in Singapore
Public healthcare clusters. Most podiatrists work for one of the three clusters:
- SingHealth: Singapore General Hospital, Changi General Hospital and SingHealth Polyclinics, whose allied health team includes podiatrists (singhealth.com.sg). Changi General Hospital’s service covers gait analysis, diabetic foot care, lower limb wound care, orthotics, sports podiatry and general foot and nail care (cgh.com.sg).
- NUHS: podiatrists at Alexandra Hospital, National University Hospital, Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and National University Polyclinics carry out nail surgery under local anaesthesia, wound debridement and custom insoles, with a strong focus on preventing diabetic amputations. Alexandra Hospital lists wound care, footwear assessment, debridement, musculoskeletal care and nail treatment (ah.com.sg).
- National Healthcare Group (NHG): recruits podiatrists for Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and Yishun Community Hospital, Woodlands Hospital and its polyclinics. Duties include high-risk diabetic foot management, vascular and neurological assessment, wound care and musculoskeletal assessment (careers.nhghealth.com.sg).
Diabetes is the main driver of demand, and polyclinic podiatry focuses on screening, nail and skin care and early intervention. Hospital roles add inpatient wound care and multidisciplinary work with vascular and orthopaedic teams.
Private practice. Private clinics focus on biomechanics, custom orthoses, sports injuries, paediatrics and nail surgery. Larger groups such as Family Podiatry Centre run in-house CAD/CAM orthotic labs and operate in both Singapore and Kuala Lumpur (familypodiatrycentre.com). Smaller independent and physiotherapy-led clinics also employ podiatrists.
Employers and job search channels
Public sector posts are advertised on the cluster career portals: SingHealth Careers, NHG Careers and the NUHS careers pages. The government job portal MyCareersFuture carries many private and public vacancies. LinkedIn and recruitment agencies are also active.
Job titles used in Singapore advertisements include Podiatrist, Senior Podiatrist, Sr / Podiatrist and, for support roles, Therapy Assistant (Podiatry).
International candidates and documentation
- A bachelor’s degree in podiatry from a recognised university. Degrees approved by the Podiatry Board of Australia or the HCPC are the most familiar to employers.
- Current registration in your country of training and a certificate of good standing.
- Evidence of hospital experience, especially in high-risk diabetic foot and wound care, for senior grades.
- PA(S) membership once you are resident in Singapore.
- Fluent English. Mandarin, Malay or Tamil are useful in polyclinic and community settings.
Visa and employment considerations
Foreign professionals usually need an Employment Pass (EP), applied for by the employer. There are two stages. First, the salary must meet the EP qualifying salary, currently S$5,600 a month at age 23 or below, rising with age; this goes up to S$6,000 for new applications from 1 January 2027 (mom.gov.sg). Second, the application must score at least 40 points under COMPASS, the points framework covering salary, qualifications, workforce diversity and the employer’s support for local employment, with bonus points for shortage occupations (mom.gov.sg). Candidates on lower salaries may be considered under the S Pass, which has its own salary threshold and employer quotas (mom.gov.sg). Rules change regularly, so confirm current requirements with the Ministry of Manpower.
Pedorthists, footwear and supplier-side roles
In Singapore, custom insoles and footwear advice are delivered mainly by podiatrists in hospitals and private clinics, and pedorthics is not a separately regulated profession. There are openings in orthotic labs, footwear retail, and diabetic footwear and wound care distribution, as well as education and clinical specialist roles with medical device companies, many with regional responsibility for Southeast Asia.
Why Singapore matters for IMEA POD readers
Singapore offers something rare in Asia: podiatry built into every public cluster and polyclinic network, with clear grades, structured career progression and a professional association recognised by the Ministry of Health. Its diabetic foot model, based on polyclinic screening and hospital limb-salvage teams, is a useful reference for health systems across the Gulf and South Asia.
For overseas-trained podiatrists the barriers are mainly immigration and competition, not registration. A recognised degree, hospital experience and a realistic view of EP salary thresholds are the keys. Singapore public hospital experience is also a strong credential for later roles elsewhere in Asia and the Gulf.
